A good Hangman phrase is something your partner could reasonably recognize, not a private joke they have never heard. Short sayings, ordinary situations and slightly ridiculous complaints all work. Start with WHO ATE MY PIZZA, HOME SWEET HOME or PASS THE POPCORN for a friendly first round.
The 60 ideas below contain only English letters and spaces. Each is 24 characters or fewer, including spaces, so it fits the custom-answer field in our two-player Hangman game. Keep this list out of the guesser's view: the phrases are answers, not clues to read aloud.
How to use a phrase in two-player Hangman
- Open Hangman and choose Two players on one shared device.
- The setter privately enters one phrase. Check the spelling before confirming it.
- Use Hide word & pass device and hand the device to the guesser.
- The guesser starts when ready and selects letters. Spaces are already visible; a correct letter reveals every matching position.
- After the round, use Swap roles so both people get a turn choosing an answer.
There are six wrong-letter allowances. Guess using the letter buttons, even if you think you know the whole phrase; this game does not have a separate full-answer submission. Custom rounds are local, not online rooms, and the answer is not saved as a resumable game or put into a share link. Refreshing the tab ends that custom round.
For a first game, agree to give the category hint before any guesses. That is a spoken house rule, not an extra hint field in the app. If you are playing remotely, a paper version over a voice or video call is simpler: the setter manages the blanks and reads each result aloud.

A worked round: PASS THE POPCORN
Tell the guesser the category is food and free time, then show a phrase with word lengths 4, 3 and 7. Do not read the phrase aloud. Guessing P reveals three positions: the opening letter of PASS and two positions in POPCORN. A single correct guess can do a lot of work.
The three-letter middle word might suggest THE, but it is still a hypothesis. Try a letter that tests that idea, then use the longer word's pattern to narrow the possibilities. Guessing an unrelated rare letter because it has not been used yet is less informative.

When the round ends, talk about the clue that made the phrase recognizable. Was it the category, a repeated letter or the short middle word? This is more useful for the next round than simply picking a longer answer.
Make funny phrases fair, not impossible
Share the same reference points. An idiom such as ON CLOUD NINE is fair only if the other player knows the expression. For English learners, use the everyday or food groups first. Explain the meaning after the reveal, not during the guessing.
Do not confuse length with difficulty. A longer familiar phrase can reveal a helpful pattern. A tiny answer with unusual letters may be much harder. The character counts above are for fitting the input field, not a difficulty score. Our Hangman words and strategy guide explains how repeated letters and word patterns change a round.
Keep punctuation predictable. These lists avoid it completely. The custom game also accepts spaces, apostrophes and hyphens, but not every symbol or number. Spell out an answer rather than trying to hide a digit in the phrase.
Use matching sets when keeping score. Let each player choose from the same group and alternate setters. One point for solving the phrase is an easy house rule. Giving one person a familiar greeting and the other an obscure saying is not a meaningful comparison.
Common questions about Hangman phrases
Can Hangman answers be more than one word?
Yes. A phrase works as long as the players agree to use phrases and the setter shows the word breaks. In our two-player mode, spaces are displayed without needing a guess, and the complete answer must fit the 24-character limit.
What are good Hangman phrases for children?
Start with phrases they already say, such as HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BACK TO SCHOOL or MOVIE NIGHT. Give a category and check that they can read every word. Familiarity matters more than choosing the shortest option.
Can both players choose an answer at once?
Not in this pass-and-play mode. One person sets a secret phrase and the other guesses, then you swap. For other formats, see seven two-player word games, including spoken games and shared puzzle challenges.
