How It Works

Want the words and roles handled for you? Start the free game

One tap replaces the pen, paper, and card-dealing, start a round in seconds.

01

Generate the round

Add your players and tap generate. The generator secretly picks who's the imposter and pulls a random secret word for everyone else, no manual setup.

02

Pass and reveal

Pass the phone around. Each player privately sees the secret word, except the imposter, who's told they're the imposter and gets nothing (or an optional hint).

03

Clue, discuss, vote

Take turns hinting at the word without saying it. Debate who sounds unsure, then vote to catch the imposter, or bluff your way to victory if it's you.

Imposter Game Generator, FAQ

Is this imposter game generator free?

Yes. The sample tool is free, and so is starting the game on one phone or in an online room. Reaching ten sample words does not ask you to pay.

Does this page secretly choose the imposter?

No. This sample reveals a word on the page. Use the free game for private role assignment and voting, or arrange your own word cards when playing away from the screen.

How many words can I generate?

The demo contains 25 sample words and lets you generate ten different words per browser day. The allowance is shared between languages in the same browser. You can return tomorrow or start the free game now.

Can I play the imposter word game online with friends?

Yes. Choose Create a free room, enter the online setup and invite your friends. Online games support 3–15 players. Pass-and-play on one phone supports 3–15.

Is an impostor word generator a different game?

Impostor and imposter are alternative spellings. Here they refer to the same secret-word party game, where one player tries to bluff without knowing the group’s word.

Can I choose a category in this sample?

This sample mixes familiar words and has no category selector. Start the free game to choose a category for your group, or browse the linked word-list guide for ideas.

Imposter game with hints: what does the hint reveal?

In Classic, Imposter Hint gives the imposter the category, such as Animals or Football Players. It starts on for a fresh setup, directly below Categories. It does not automatically supply an individual clue word such as “yellow” for banana or reveal the secret answer. The host controls the setting in an online room.

Spoken clues are different: for umbrella, one person might say “rain” and another “folding.” Those are examples people choose aloud, not exact hints supplied by the website. Keep the category hint on for an approachable first round, or turn it off for less starting information.

Private roles on one phone or separate devices

Pass & Play supports 3–15 players on one device. Add names, select familiar categories and check the round mode, imposter count and time limit. Each person reveals and hides their own role before passing the phone. The time limit is the game timer, not an automatic timer for every individual clue.

Online rooms support 3–15 players on separate devices. The host shares the joining details and checks the settings before starting. Remote friends need a way to speak together, such as a separate voice call. Keep private role cards out of screen sharing. The public preview above does not assign roles and shows its word to anyone looking at the screen.

A word generator for your next imposter game

An imposter game generator helps you choose a secret word when nobody wants to be the person who picks it. In the classic imposter word game, most players know the same word. One player does not know it and tries to blend in by listening carefully and giving a believable clue. The fun comes from deciding whether a vague answer is clever, unlucky, or a bluff.

Use the tool above when you need a quick starting word for a round you are organizing yourself. It draws from a separate sample of 25 familiar words, with up to 10 generations per browser day. The sample does not assign roles or hide the word from anyone looking at this page. If everyone is gathered around the screen, wait to reveal it until the imposter cannot see it.

How to use the imposter word generator with friends

Choose an organizer, agree who will receive the word, and keep the screen away from the player who should not know it. Press Generate a word once. Share that same word privately with the other players; do not generate a new word for every person, because the group needs a shared secret. You can write matching word cards and one imposter card if you prefer playing with paper.

When everybody is ready, take turns giving a short clue. Listen to the connections between answers, discuss anything suspicious, and vote for the person you think is bluffing. For a simpler setup where nobody needs to organize the word cards, use the free game buttons above. The game distributes roles privately and manages voting for you.

What makes a good imposter game word?

Start with something everyone recognizes, such as a food, animal, place or everyday object. A good word has several possible associations: how it looks, where you find it, what it does, or a memory connected to it. That gives honest players room to be creative and gives the imposter something to work with.

Obscure words can make a knowledgeable player look suspicious simply because somebody else has never heard of the subject. For mixed ages or different first languages, begin with familiar ideas such as pizza, beach or elephant. With experienced friends, make the clues less direct before making the words more difficult. In the full game, choose categories that suit your group; this small generator sample has no category filter.

Example round: secret word “Pizza”

Imagine the group receives Pizza. One player says “oven,” another says “slice,” and a third says “Friday night.” All three connect to the word in a different way. A player who says “food” may be the imposter playing safely, or an honest player trying not to reveal too much. One vague clue is a reason to ask a question, not proof of a role.

Avoid saying the word itself, spelling it out, or giving a clue so specific that the secret becomes obvious immediately. Agree on a clue length before the round starts. If your group allows discussion, ask people to explain their connection without naming the answer. This turns a random word into a conversation instead of a simple vocabulary test.

Sample generator or the full imposter word game?

The sample is useful for choosing a word quickly. It is a public reveal, so everyone who can see your screen can read the answer. The free game adds private role reveals, category selection and voting. On one phone, it supports 3–15 players: reveal your role, hide it, and pass the device. For friends on separate devices, create an online room for 3–15 players and share the invitation.

Reaching the sample limit is not a payment request. You can start the free game immediately, or return tomorrow for more sample generations. The generator’s ten-word allowance applies to this browser demo, not to a purchase or subscription. There is no need to download an app to start playing in your browser.

More ways to keep rounds interesting

Rotate who gives the first clue so one person is not always answering without context. Try a familiar category for the first round, then let the group choose the next one. Keep your rules consistent within a round so people are judged on the same expectations. A quieter player may need thinking time, so give everyone a fair turn before discussing suspects.

For a themed session, try Football Imposter with friends who recognize the players. For a different word-based challenge, Undercover gives players related but different words, so they must notice subtle differences in the clues. Those are separate game experiences, not modes of this sample button. If you want to prepare paper cards or browse a longer selection yourself, our word-list guide is the next useful place to look.
