What is Timer Imposter?

Timer Imposter is a social deduction party game built around one simple skill: feeling time pass. At the start of every round each player secretly sees a target time, for example 5.30 seconds. Everyone, that is, except the Imposter, who only learns that they are the Imposter. Then, one by one, players press START and STOP on a stopwatch that never shows its numbers. The crew tries to stop as close to the secret time as they can. The Imposter has to guess, bluff and blend in.

After everyone has played, the table talks it over and votes for the player they think was faking it. Only then does the game reveal the secret time and drop every player's result onto a time line, so you see at once who was spot on, who was way off and whether the time imposter gave themselves away. A round takes about three minutes, so the imposter timer game works as a quick warm up or as a full evening of rounds.

How to play Timer Imposter in 4 steps

  1. See your secret

Pass the phone around. Each player taps to see the secret time in a digital readout, or the word IMPOSTER. Hide it and pass the phone on.

  2. Stop the hidden clock

In a random order, each player presses START, counts in their head and presses STOP. No numbers are shown and nobody learns their own result.

  3. Talk and vote

Discuss for about a minute. Who hesitated? Who stopped far too early? Then everyone votes in secret on the phone for the Imposter.

  4. Reveal the time line

The game shows who the Imposter was, the secret time and every player's time on one line. Points are added and the next round deals a new time and a new Imposter.

Why the stopwatch stays hidden

If the clock showed its digits, Timer Imposter would turn into a reading contest. Hiding the numbers is what makes the stopwatch imposter fair and funny. The crew has to rely on their inner sense of time, and the Imposter cannot copy anyone, because nobody's result is visible until the very end. Even the light on the button moves at random moments, so you cannot count along with it.

Hidden times also make the discussion interesting. You only have what you saw: how long someone held the phone, whether they looked confident, whether they rushed to press STOP. Those small clues are the heart of the game. If someone leaves the screen while the clock is running, the turn is cancelled and they simply play it again, so nobody can sneak a look at another app.

How scoring works

  • If the Imposter is caught, every crew member scores 1 point.
  • If the Imposter escapes, the Imposter scores 3 points.
  • The crew member who stopped closest to the secret time earns a 1 point bonus.
  • An Imposter who escapes and still stops closer than at least one crew member earns a 1 point bonus too.
  • With 2 Imposters each one is scored on their own, and the crew scores 1 point for every Imposter caught. A tied vote catches nobody, so think before you split your votes.

Tips for the Imposter

  • Watch the setting. You know the time range, so a time in the middle of it is a safe guess. Pick one of the four ranges, or choose Custom and set your own from half a second up to 60 seconds with the slider.
  • Copy the rhythm of the table. If the players before you all held the phone for a long time, do not stop after one second.
  • Look calm. Crew members also miss, so act as if you are just a little unsure, like everybody else.
  • During the talk, point at the player who stopped earliest or latest. A confident accusation takes the attention off you.

Tips for the crew

  • Count the way you always count, for example "one thousand, two thousand". A steady method beats guessing.
  • Watch the others while they play. A player who stops much sooner or later than the rest may not know the time.
  • Never say the time out loud, not even close to it, or the Imposter gets a free answer.
  • Remember that the order is random. The Imposter can play first, with no one to copy.

One phone or online

Play on one phone

Sit together, type the names and pass a single phone around. The secret, the stopwatch and the vote all happen on the same screen, one player at a time. Nothing to install, no account and no internet needed once the page is open.

Play online

Friends far away? Create an online room, share the code and each player uses their own phone, ideally while you talk on a call. The secret times stay on the server until the reveal, so even the Imposter cannot peek at them.
