Our Story
Find The Imposter was born in 2023 out of a simple frustration: every party game night required either buying physical cards, downloading yet another app, or convincing everyone to create an account. We wanted something that worked in under 30 seconds on any phone, no setup, no cost, no barriers.
What started as a weekend side project quickly grew into a game played by tens of thousands of people across more than 50 countries. Players from India, Egypt, Spain, France, Germany, and the United States make up our largest communities, which is why we have built full support for 6 languages, including complete right-to-left layout for Arabic.
Today Find The Imposter is actively maintained and updated. Every new feature, from the public room browser to Chaos Mode to voice chat integration, comes directly from player feedback in our Discord community. The game will always be free. That is not changing.

Marcus has spent over a decade designing and studying social deduction games. After years of running game nights for friends, colleagues, and strangers at conventions, he built Find The Imposter to make the genre accessible to everyone, regardless of location, language, or device.
He writes all the game guides and strategy articles on this site. When he is not updating the game, he is playing it with a group of friends somewhere that definitely has too many snacks.

How Find the Imposter Works
Find the Imposter is a social deduction party game where one or more players secretly take on the role of the Imposter. Every other player, the Crewmates, receives a secret word that only they know. The Imposter receives nothing and must blend in by faking their way through the game.
During each round, players take turns giving a single-word clue related to the secret word. The Imposter listens carefully to each clue, trying to piece together what the word might be, while giving their own plausible-sounding answer without revealing that they don't actually know.
After every player has given their clue, the group enters a discussion and voting phase. Crewmates try to identify the Imposter by analysing whose clues seemed too vague, generic, or out of place. The Imposter tries to deflect suspicion onto others.
If the Imposter survives the vote, or correctly guesses the secret word after being caught, they win. If the Crewmates successfully vote out the Imposter, the Crew wins. The game supports 3 to 20 players, making it one of the most scalable party games available online.
Game Modes Explained
Local Pass-and-Play Mode
Perfect for in-person gatherings. One device is shared between all players. Each player takes a turn holding the phone or tablet to secretly view their role, then passes it to the next player. No internet connection required.
Online Multiplayer Mode
Each player uses their own device from anywhere in the world. The host creates a room, receives a 6-character code, and shares it with friends. The game syncs in real time via Firebase, so everyone sees the same state simultaneously. Optional room passwords keep games private.
Chaos Mode
Chaos Mode adds unpredictable twists each round, Ghost Mode, Silent rounds, Random Imposters, and Question-only rounds. Designed for experienced players who want more variety and higher replayability.
Classroom Mode
Designed for teachers and educators. Classroom mode lets teachers control the pace, select subject-relevant categories, and run the game with a full class. It builds vocabulary, critical thinking, and public speaking skills in a format students genuinely enjoy.
50+ Word Categories
Find the Imposter includes over 50 built-in word categories across 6 languages so that no two games ever feel the same. Categories range from everyday topics like Food and Animals to niche areas like Video Games, Internet Culture, and Science. New categories are added regularly based on player feedback.

Find the Imposter is and always will be 100% free to play. We believe that the best social experiences shouldn't sit behind paywalls. Party games are fundamentally about bringing people together, and charging per player or per session would defeat that purpose entirely.
The game requires no account creation, no subscription, and no app download. You can play from any device with a browser in under 30 seconds. The Android app on the Google Play Store is also completely free, with no in-app purchases or locked features.
