How It Works

How to Play Undercover Mode

One device or many, start a round in seconds, no cards needed.

01

Everyone gets a word, almost

All players secretly see the same word, except one or more Undercover players. They get a different, related word without realizing anyone else has something else.

02

Give your clues

Take turns describing your word without saying it. The Undercover player has to bluff and blend in without knowing their word is actually different.

03

Vote out the Undercover players

Discuss who sounded off, then vote. The crew wins by catching every Undercover player, the Undercover players win if they survive long enough to equal or outnumber the crew.

Meet the Roles

Who's Who in Undercover Mode

Three roles, three different secrets.

Crew

Crew

Has the real secret word and is trying to catch anyone who doesn't.

Undercover

Undercover

Secretly gets a different, related word instead of the real one.

Mr. White

Mr. White

Gets no word at all, but one guess to steal the win if caught.

Classic vs Undercover

How Undercover Mode Is Different

Same core game, a completely different feel.

Classic Imposter

  • The imposter gets no word at all
  • Bluffing is total, they're guessing blind
  • One round, then the game ends
  • Best for: fast, chaotic rounds

Undercover Mode

  • The Undercover player gets a real, related word
  • Bluffing is subtle, they think they're right
  • Play multiple rounds until everyone's caught
  • Optional Mr. White role, no word at all, one last-chance guess to steal the win
  • Optional Random Count, the game rolls the Undercover count for you, crew always stays in the majority
  • Best for: sharper questions, longer games

Undercover Mode, FAQ

Undercover Mode is a social deduction mode inside Find The Imposter. Almost every player gets the same secret word, but one or more players, the Undercover, secretly get a different, related word. Everyone gives clues, discusses, and votes to catch the Undercover players before they blend in.

Undercover Mode, The Sneakier Way to Play the Imposter Game

Undercover Mode takes the classic imposter party game and adds a twist: instead of getting no word at all, the imposter, now called the Undercover player, secretly gets a different word from everyone else. It's close enough to the real word that the bluffing feels natural, but different enough that sharp questions can expose it. That small shift changes the whole game: clues get subtler, accusations get trickier, and the reveal at the end hits harder. Undercover Mode ships with its own set of curated categories built for this exact format, real football and basketball player pairings, close animal and food lookalikes, movie and video game rivals, and regional culture packs like Moroccan and Egyptian Culture, on top of a big mixed word pool. Pick a difficulty and the game serves up pairs that are genuinely close at the hard setting, so your group needs real questions, not just a quick guess. Want even higher stakes? Turn on the optional Mr. White role and one Undercover player gets no word at all, just their wits. Catch them and they still get one last private guess at the secret word, and a correct guess steals the win for their whole team right at the buzzer. Not sure how many Undercover players is the right number for your group size? Flip on Random Count and let the game decide for you, always keeping the crew in a safe majority. Play Undercover Mode online free, on one phone passed around the table or with friends in separate rooms. Choose how many players are secretly Undercover, set how many rounds you want to play, and go, no app, no signup, no cost. Give clues, defend your answers, and see who's really Undercover.
