Getting Started

What is Find the Imposter?

Find the Imposter is a free word-based party game. The crew receives a secret word; the imposter knows their role but does not receive that word. Give clues, discuss and vote.

Is Find the Imposter free to play?

Yes. You can play free in your browser without a download. The game is supported by advertising.

Do I need to create an account to play?

No account is required. You can jump straight into a game without signing up or providing any personal information. Just choose a player name and start playing. We use anonymous sessions to keep the game running smoothly online.

How many players do I need?

Play with 3–15 people sharing one device, or 3–15 players in an online room. For a first round, try 4–6 players and one imposter.

What devices can I play on?

Find the Imposter works on any device with a modern web browser, smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers. It is fully responsive and optimized for mobile play. An Android app is also available on the Google Play Store for an even smoother mobile experience.

How to Play

How do you play the Imposter game step by step?

Add players on one device or create an online room and share its code. Read roles privately, hide the screen, then take turns giving clues. Discuss the clues and vote before revealing the result.

How do you win as the Imposter?

In standard mode, the crew must catch every imposter without accusing an innocent player. Otherwise the imposters win. Follow the result shown by the game, including ties and any enabled special roles. A final word guess is not part of standard mode; Mr. White has a separate guessing rule in Undercover mode.

How do Crewmates win?

In standard mode, the crew must catch every imposter without accusing an innocent player. Otherwise the imposters win. Follow the result shown by the game, including ties and any enabled special roles. A final word guess is not part of standard mode; Mr. White has a separate guessing rule in Undercover mode.

Can there be more than one Imposter?

Yes! You can configure 1, 2, or 3 Imposters per game. More Imposters make the game harder for the Crewmates and more exciting for larger groups. With multiple Imposters, they don't know who each other are, so even the Imposters must be careful.

What are the word categories?

Find the Imposter has 40+ built-in word categories including Food, Animals, Sports, Movies, Video Games, Countries, Jobs, Musical Instruments, Nature, Science, Technology, Holidays, and many more. You can select specific categories before each game or let the game pick randomly. New categories are added regularly.

Online Multiplayer

How do I start an online game with friends?

Click "Play Online" on the homepage, enter your name, and create a room. You'll get a 6-character room code. Share that code (or the direct link) with your friends, they enter the code on the Join screen and appear in your lobby instantly. The host can adjust settings and start the game when everyone is ready.

Can I play online with friends who are far away?

Absolutely, that's the main point of online mode. Each player uses their own device from anywhere in the world. You can play over a video call (Zoom, Discord, FaceTime) while the game runs in the browser. The game syncs in real time so everyone sees the same state simultaneously.

How do I keep an online room private?

Keep the room private, share the invitation only with your friends and use join requests to review who enters. A room link is an invitation, so avoid posting it publicly. Room settings do not include a password field.

What happens if a player disconnects during an online game?

The game uses a heartbeat system to track active players. If a player goes offline for more than 2 minutes, they are automatically removed from the room. The host can also manually remove inactive players from the lobby at any time.

Can the host transfer control to another player?

Yes. The host can transfer the host role to any other player in the lobby. This is useful if the original host needs to leave and someone else needs to manage the game settings and start the next round.

Game Modes & Features

What is Chaos Mode?

Chaos Mode adds unpredictable twists to the game. Special rounds can include Random Imposters (the number of Imposters changes each round), Silent rounds (no verbal discussion, voting only on instinct), and Question rounds (players can only communicate by asking yes/no questions). Chaos Mode is great for experienced players who want more variety.

What is the difference between local and online mode?

In local (pass-and-play) mode, all players share one device. Each player takes a turn holding the phone or tablet to see their secret word privately, then passes it to the next person. In online mode, every player uses their own device and roles are distributed automatically over the internet in real time.

Can I set a time limit for giving clues?

Yes. You can set a timer ranging from 30 seconds to 10 minutes per round, or play without any time limit at all. The timer is visible to all players and counts down during the clue-giving phase. This keeps the game moving and adds pressure to the Imposter.

What is the Imposter Hint feature?

When Imposter Hint is enabled, the Imposter receives a vague category hint instead of the exact secret word. For example, if the word is "Pizza", the Imposter might see "Food" as a hint. This makes the Imposter's job slightly easier and is recommended for beginners or younger players.

What is Undercover Mode?

Undercover Mode is a twist on the classic game: instead of getting no word at all, the Undercover player secretly receives a different, related word from everyone else, for example the Crew gets "Coffee" while the Undercover player gets "Tea". That makes their clues sound almost right, so bluffing is subtler and catching them takes sharper listening. You can also enable Mr. White, a wildcard role that gets no word and one guess to steal the win if eliminated, and Random Undercover Count, which hides how many Undercover players there are each round. Turn it on from the mode settings before you start, or read the full breakdown on the Undercover Mode guide.

What do the Easy, Medium, and Hard difficulty levels mean in Undercover Mode?

Difficulty controls how close the Undercover player's word is to everyone else's. Easy pairs are clearly distinct concepts (like "Sun" and "Moon"), so the Undercover player is easy to spot. Medium pairs share the same general idea but differ in specifics (like "Coffee" and "Tea"). Hard pairs are close, overlapping comparisons that genuinely sound alike in clues (like "Coke" and "Pepsi"), so catching the Undercover player takes real attention to detail.

Classroom & Education

Is Find the Imposter suitable for classrooms?

Yes, Find the Imposter is widely used by teachers as a classroom activity. It builds vocabulary, critical thinking, and public speaking skills in an engaging game format. The classroom mode lets teachers control the pace, choose subject-relevant word categories, and play with a full class of students on their own devices.

What age group is the game appropriate for?

Find the Imposter is suitable for ages 8 and up. The game requires basic reading ability and the capacity to give and interpret one-word clues. Younger players may need an adult to explain the Imposter role. The game contains no violent or adult content and is safe for school environments.

Can teachers create custom word lists for their subject?

Custom word lists are on our roadmap and actively being developed. For now, teachers can choose from 40+ existing categories that cover topics like Geography, Science, History vocabulary, and Animals, many of which align naturally with school subjects. Join our Discord community to request new categories.

Technical & Support

The game is not loading, what should I do?

If the game fails to load or shows a connection error, the most common cause is an ad blocker or browser extension (like uBlock Origin or Brave Shields) blocking the Firebase connection we use for real-time sync. Try disabling your ad blocker for this site, or switch to a different browser such as Chrome or Edge. Clearing your browser cache can also help.

What languages does Find the Imposter support?

The game interface supports English, Arabic, Spanish, French, Hindi and German. Change the language in the header or settings. Arabic uses a right-to-left layout. Available word categories and blog articles can differ by language.

Is there an app I can download?

Find the Imposter has a free Android app on Google Play. The website also has other games, including Mafia and Guess the Player, which are not included in that Android app. On iPhone, you can play in Safari and use Add to Home Screen.

How do I report a bug or give feedback?

Use the feedback button available throughout the game to submit bug reports, suggestions, or general feedback. You can also join our Discord community to chat directly with the team and other players. We read every piece of feedback and regularly release updates based on player suggestions.
