New Year's Eve Games: 14 Party Ideas for Family and Friends

New Year's Eve games for family, friends and adults: countdown-friendly ideas with nothing to print, plus free phone games that fit a midnight party.

Good New Year's Eve games have one job that ordinary party games do not: they have to fit around midnight. A long game that is still going at 11:58 ruins the countdown, and a quiet puzzle at 10 p.m. lets the energy drop. The ideas below are sorted by when they work best in the evening, with sections for families, friends and adult groups.

Nothing here needs printing. A few games use a phone, and they are all free in the browser. The rest need people and, at most, paper and a pen.

Plan the night around midnight

Think of the evening in three parts. Early on, people are still arriving, so pick games that someone can join after one round. In the middle, run the longest game of the night while everyone is fresh. In the last half hour, switch to short bursts that you can stop the moment someone shouts "one minute!"

A simple schedule for a party starting at 8 p.m.:

  1. 8:00-9:30: drop-in games such as Find the Imposter or Charades.
  2. 9:30-11:00: one long game, such as Mafia, or a quiz.
  3. 11:00-11:45: Word of the Year and a lighter game.
  4. 11:45-midnight: countdown games, then the countdown itself.
  5. After midnight: relaxed games for whoever is still awake.

Games for friends and adult groups

1. Find the Imposter

Everyone gets the same secret word except the imposter, who has to bluff their way through a round of one-word clues. Then the group votes. Rounds are short, new arrivals can join the next one, and the accusations get funnier as the night goes on.

Pick categories everyone knows. Desserts & Sweets, Fast Food & Snacks or Music & Bands work well at a party. Open Find the Imposter, choose Pass & Play and add 3-15 names. If friends are celebrating somewhere else, the online rooms let them join from their own phones while you talk on a call.

2. Mafia

Mafia is the big game of the night. Players get secret roles, the Mafia pick a target each night round, and the town argues and votes during the day. It takes 20 to 40 minutes, so start it well before 11 p.m.

Our Mafia game deals the roles on one phone and gives the narrator a script to read aloud. The narrator does not play a role, which makes it a good job for a host who is also checking the food.

3. Spyfall

Everyone except the spy sees the same location. Players ask each other questions, and the spy tries to work out where they are without giving themselves away. The default round is 8 minutes, which slots neatly between other plans. Play Spyfall with 3-12 players.

4. Year in Review quiz

Before the party, ask each guest to send you two questions about the past year that the group would know: a trip someone took, a funny group chat moment, a new job, a sports result. Read them out in rounds of five and keep score on paper. Keep it kind. Nobody wants a question about their breakup.

If your group follows football, add a sports round about the year's biggest matches.

Games for families and mixed ages

5. Charades

Charades is the safest bet when ages range from six to sixty. The Charades game shows a prompt only to the actor, runs a timer of 60, 90 or 120 seconds and keeps score for two teams. Younger children can whisper the prompt to an adult partner and act it out together.

For extra prompts, see our charades ideas for game night.

6. Hum That Tune

One person hums a well-known song, with no words, and everyone else races to name it. Children's songs and film themes make it fair for kids. Grandparents usually win the older songs, which is part of the fun.

7. Early Countdown for kids

Young children rarely make it to midnight. Run a pretend countdown at 8 or 9 p.m. with the same build-up: everyone counts down from ten, cheers and makes noise. Then the kids can go to bed feeling they did not miss it.

8. Hangman on one phone

For two people or two small teams, Hangman has a two-player mode. One side types a secret word, the other guesses letters before six mistakes. Use words from the year ahead, such as "fresh start" or "new goals", and ask the guessers to work out the theme.

Countdown-friendly games for the last 15 minutes

These are short, loud and easy to stop. That is exactly what you want while someone keeps an eye on the clock.

9. Word of the Year

Everyone writes one word that sums up their year on a slip of paper and folds it. Mix the slips in a bowl. Read each word out and the group guesses who wrote it. "Exhausting" gets a laugh; "moving" starts a story. Run it around 11 p.m., before the final countdown games.

10. Sixty-Second Categories

Each minute, call out a category: things in a fridge, countries starting with S, famous footballers, animals that can swim. Teams shout as many answers as they can before the minute ends. Fifteen categories take you right up to midnight.

11. Countdown Charades

The same as charades, but every turn is 30 seconds and every prompt is something you would do at a party: blowing up a balloon, taking a group photo, dancing badly, waving at a video call. Keep going until the clock hits 11:59.

12. Prediction Envelope

Everyone writes three predictions for the coming year: one about themselves, one about the group and one about the world. Seal them in an envelope with the date and give it to the most organised person in the room. Open it next New Year's Eve. It costs one envelope and becomes a tradition fast.

Games for after midnight

13. Word Connect relay

Once the noise dies down, pass the phone round a small circle. Each person finds one word in a Word Connect level before passing it on. Nobody loses, and tired brains are welcome.

14. Two Truths and a Resolution

Each person says two true things about their past year and one fake resolution for next year. The group guesses which is the made-up plan. It is a gentle way to talk about goals without anyone having to make a speech.

Tips for a smooth game night

  • Keep rounds short before midnight. If a game might run long, play it earlier.
  • Charge one phone and keep it for the games. Pass & Play only needs one device.
  • Choose familiar topics. A guest who does not know a category is not a bad player, they are just outside the topic.
  • Let people sit out. Some guests prefer to watch, and that is fine.
