A football grid game shows a three-by-three board. Every square sits where a category on the left meets a category on the top, and your job is to name a footballer who fits both. People also call it a soccer grid game or a football connections game, and the head-to-head version is football tic-tac-toe.
Play football tic-tac-toe to try it while you read, or keep reading to see how the grid works first.
One square, one example
Put Barcelona across the top and Argentina down the side. Lionel Messi played for both, so his name claims that square. If the country were France instead, the same answer would fail: the player has to match the row and the column together.
Two styles of football grid game
| Solo grid puzzle | Football tic-tac-toe (two players) | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Fill squares with answers | Make a line of three before your friend |
| Players | One | Two, on one device or in an online room |
| What wins | Depends on the puzzle; some reward rare answers | A famous name is worth the same square as an obscure one |
| Thinking | Recall | Recall plus blocking and timing |
Both ask the same football question. The two-player version adds tactics: an easy answer that also stops your friend's line is often the best move.
What the headers can ask
In Find the Imposter's football tic-tac-toe, the headers come from a football database and can be:
- Clubs, counting first-team spells only. Youth or academy time does not count.
- National teams and regions, such as Argentina or the Balkans.
- Leagues, for example a player who had a spell at a club in the Premier League.
- Trophies, marked as winners. Runners-up do not count.
- Managers, shown as "Played under" a manager.
- Teammates, shown as "Played with" a footballer.
- Special facts, like titles won, position, preferred foot or birth decade.
Under the board, the Technical area explains each type of category on your board and shows when the database was last updated. Tap a category header on your phone for a short explanation.
Ways to play
- Play online: choose a competition, press Create room and share the six-digit code, the link or the QR code. A friend can also type the code in the Join with code field.
- Pass and play: share one phone, tablet or computer and take turns.
- Solo practice: play the computer to learn the categories before a real match.
Pick All football, or narrow the board to the Premier League, Champions League, La Liga, Serie A or World Cup. Turns last 60 seconds by default, and you can choose 30 seconds or no timer in Advanced settings.
Tips for stronger grids
- Read both headers before you search. Most rejected answers fit only one category.
- Start with the crowded squares. Big clubs and big countries have many valid answers, which leaves harder squares for later.
- Block early. If your friend has two marks in a row, the third square matters more than a clever name.
- Search by surname. Type part of a name; if two players share it, use the age or position badge to tell them apart.
- Report data problems. If you are sure an answer is right but it is rejected, use Report a data issue and add a source.
Common questions
Is a football grid the same as football tic-tac-toe? They use the same idea. A grid puzzle is usually solo; football tic-tac-toe turns it into a two-player line game.
Do I need an account? No. It runs in your browser, and no download is needed.
Can I use the same footballer twice? Yes, wherever the player matches both categories of the new square.
