How to play football tic-tac-toe
Play football tic-tac-toe by choosing an empty square and naming a footballer who matches both its row and column. For example, Lionel Messi connects Barcelona and Argentina. A correct answer places your X or O on the board. Make three in a row horizontally, vertically or diagonally to win, or block your friend before they complete their line. You can reuse a footballer wherever both categories match. You can also practise against the computer.
Pick a competition and difficulty
All football mixes clubs, countries, managers, teammates and achievements. You can also choose Premier League, Champions League, La Liga, Serie A or World Cup. Easy offers more possible connections; Normal balances familiar and less obvious answers; Hard gives you narrower intersections. Every generated square has at least one answer in the game database.
Find and submit a player
Tap a square to open player search. Type a first name, surname or part of both, in either order. Use the age and position badges, where available, to distinguish players with the same name. On desktop, use the arrow keys to browse and Enter to submit; Escape closes the search. A listed name is a search result, not a hint that the answer is correct.
Read both football categories
Club connections refer to the first team, so youth academy spells do not count. Winning a trophy and appearing in its final are different achievements. For the Big 5 categories, count England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France. Read the labels carefully before submitting a player: a wrong answer leaves the square open and passes the turn.
Turns, draws and the next board
Turns use 60 seconds by default; choose 30 seconds or untimed in Advanced settings. Skipping or running out of time passes the turn. A full board with no winning line is drawn. A draw offer pauses the clock while the other player accepts or declines. A win adds one point and a draw adds none. The next board keeps your match score and alternates the starting side.
A worked example: club and country
Imagine Barcelona across the top and Argentina down the side. Lionel Messi matches both, so selecting him claims their intersection. If the country were France, that same answer would not work: one correct category is not enough. Check the meaning of each label too. A national-team category is different from a domestic league, and a World Cup winner is different from a player who appeared in a World Cup final.
Practise football tic-tac-toe against the computer
Choose Solo practice when no friend is available. The computer takes the other side and submits footballers for its squares. Easy is a useful place to learn the search and spot immediate threats; Normal and Hard make you think more carefully about your next move. You can choose an untimed match to focus on the connections, or a shorter turn timer to practise making decisions under pressure.
Three habits for a stronger game
First, look for a square that completes your own line. If there is no immediate win, check whether your opponent has two marks that need blocking. Finally, look for moves that give you more than one possible winning line. The center belongs to four lines, but it only helps if you can name a valid player there. Think of an answer before opening search, and remember that reusing a familiar footballer is allowed wherever both categories match.
What each category means
Under the board, the Technical area explains each type of category on your board and shows when the database was last updated. Tap a category header for a short explanation. “Played with” connects a player to a teammate and “Played under” to a manager; trophy categories are marked as winners, and runners-up do not count.
Play football XO online with a friend
Choose Play online, select a competition and press Create room to open a private room. Share the invitation link, QR code or six-digit room code. Opening the link joins your friend automatically; or type the six-digit code in the Join with code field. After an accepted draw, the player who offered it can start the next round. Leaving the match ends the room for both players. A brief connection loss allows reconnection; inactive rooms expire after three minutes. Untimed rooms stay open while both players remain connected and at least one game tab is visible.
Pass and play on one device
Share a phone, tablet or computer and take turns choosing your football connections. No account or app download is needed. The scoreboard shows whose turn it is and keeps your points between rounds. Start with Easy when playing with someone new to football trivia, then try a harder football grid when you both want a challenge.
Questions while playing
Can I play on a phone without downloading an app?
Yes. Open the game in your mobile browser, tap a square and use the search field to find a player. On one phone, take turns with Pass and play.
Does a player have to play for the club today?
Club categories include past first-team connections, not just the current squad. A youth-team spell alone does not qualify. Read special categories separately: a trophy, teammate or manager connection has its own requirement.
What should I do if a correct answer is rejected?
Check both labels and, for shared names, the age or position badge when available. If the answer still looks right, open Report a data issue after the rejection and add a source or explanation. Email report opens your email app; send the message there, or copy it to contact support.
