Football tic-tac-toe, also called football XO or soccer tic-tac-toe, turns a familiar three-by-three grid into a football trivia challenge. A square might ask for a player who played for two clubs, represented a country or won a trophy. Find the connection, claim the square and block your friend’s next move. You can also practise against the computer.

For example, Lionel Messi connects Barcelona and Argentina. Match the exact categories shown on your board, and choose carefully: tapping a search result submits your answer straight away.

How to play football tic-tac-toe

   Pick a competition and square

   Choose your competition, then tap an open square. Its row and column show the two categories your footballer must match.

   Find the footballer

   Open a square, search for a first name or surname, and tap a name to play. On a keyboard, use the arrow keys to browse and Enter to choose.

   Make your line

   A correct answer claims the square. Connect three of your marks to win.

Choose how you want to play football XO

Have a friend beside you? Pass and play lets you share one screen. Solo practice is a match against the computer: start on Easy to learn the category combinations, then try Normal or Hard. Choose it when you want to take your time; choose a regular match when you want control over the competition, difficulty and turn length.

Football tic-tac-toe or a football grid puzzle?

Both ask you to connect football categories, but the goal here is to make a line of three Xs or Os. You do not need to fill all nine squares to win. A familiar player can be the best answer if that square blocks your opponent or completes your line. Rare names do not earn extra points. Think about where to play as well as which footballer fits.

A quick football quiz for two friends

Turns use 60 seconds by default; choose 30 seconds or untimed in Advanced settings. The timer pauses while a draw request is being answered. A win adds one point; a draw adds none. After an accepted online draw, the player who offered it can start the next round. A new board keeps the match score and alternates the starting side.

A football grid where every move matters

Look for a winning line before searching for a name. If your opponent has two marks in a row, try to block the third square. The center connects four possible lines, but you still need a footballer who matches both headers. Unlike a solo football grid puzzle, this two-player football quiz rewards the right move, not a rare name.

Choose your football quiz difficulty

Start with Easy for boards with more possible answers and more familiar connections. Normal balances broad and narrow categories, while Hard challenges you with fewer obvious answers. Choose All football for the widest mix, or focus on Premier League, Champions League, La Liga, Serie A or World Cup. Difficulty changes the board, not which valid footballers you can use.

What counts as a correct football connection?

Both category labels matter. A first-team club connection does not include a youth academy spell. A trophy category asks for that achievement, rather than simply playing in the competition. The five big leagues refer to England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France. Search results help you find names; appearing in the search does not mean a player fits the selected square. For shared names, check the position and age when these are available.
