Mafia vs Werewolf: are they the same game? We break down the themes, role names and rules, and explain how one free app lets you play both.

Mafia vs Werewolf: Is It the Same Game?

If you have heard of both the Mafia Game and the Werewolf game, you might wonder: are these two separate games, or the same thing under different names? The answer is almost entirely the latter, with a few cosmetic differences worth understanding if you want to sound confident at your next game night.

The Short Answer

Mafia and Werewolf are the same social-deduction game. The rules are identical. The mechanics are identical. The strategies are identical. The only differences are:

  1. Theme (organised crime vs. supernatural horror)
  2. Role names (Mafia vs. Werewolves, Villager vs. Townsperson)
  3. Origin (Mafia came first; Werewolf is a re-themed variant that became equally popular)

That is genuinely all. If you know how to play one, you know how to play the other.

The History: Which Came First?

The game was invented in 1986 by Dmitry Davidoff, a psychology student at Moscow State University. The original version used a Mafia theme, the killers were Mafia members, and the innocents were citizens of a small town trying to root them out.

The game spread through social circles, university campuses, and summer camps. When it reached Western Europe and North America in the 1990s, publishers began releasing themed versions. The most popular re-theme replaced the Mafia with Werewolves and the townspeople with villagers, a gothic horror flavour that resonated strongly.

Today both names are in widespread use. "Mafia" tends to dominate in Eastern Europe and Russia. "Werewolf" (or "Werwolf") is more common in Western Europe and has been popularised by games like The Resistance, One Night Ultimate Werewolf, and others in the genre.

Role Name Comparison

Mafia Game Werewolf Game Role
Mafia Werewolves The secret killers
Villager Villager / Townsperson The uninformed majority
Detective Seer Investigates one player per night
Doctor Doctor / Witch Saves one player per night
Narrator Moderator / Game Master Runs the night phases

Some Werewolf versions add unique roles not found in classic Mafia (like the Witch, who can both save and kill in one night), but the core loop is identical.

Gameplay: Any Differences?

Mechanically, no. Both games alternate night and day phases:

  • Night: the killers secretly eliminate one player; power roles take their actions
  • Day: the town debates and votes to eliminate a suspect
  • Win: killers win when they equal the town; town wins when all killers are gone

The one area where variants diverge is in optional rules, some Werewolf editions have a "Witch" role that can cast a save potion AND a kill potion in a single night, which is more powerful than the standard Doctor. These are game-edition differences, not a Mafia-vs-Werewolf difference.

Our free Mafia Game includes 8 roles (Mafia, Villager, Detective, Doctor, Mastermind, Jester, Serial Killer, Lookout) and all of them map cleanly to both the Mafia and Werewolf flavours.

Which Should You Call It?

Use whichever your group knows. If someone asks "should we play Mafia?" and someone else says "I only know Werewolf", they are describing the same game. The conversation is often a useful ice-breaker in itself.

Some points of preference:

  • "Mafia" feels more urban, crime-thriller, sharp-suited, good for groups who lean into the social deduction as a strategic game
  • "Werewolf" has a more folkloric, atmospheric feel, good for groups who like building a dramatic narrative around the night phases

Our app leans into the Mafia Game branding, but the narrator script works for either flavour, just swap "the Mafia wake up" for "the Werewolves wake up" if your group prefers.

Why "One Night" and "Ultimate Werewolf" Are Different

A common point of confusion: games like One Night Ultimate Werewolf or One Night Ultimate Mafia are not the same game as classic Mafia/Werewolf. They are streamlined single-round variants where:

  • There is no narrator (it is app-driven)
  • There is only one night phase
  • The game ends after one vote

These are great games, but they play very differently from the multi-round, elimination-based Mafia Game described in this guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I play your Mafia Game as a Werewolf game? A: Yes. The rules are identical. Just call the Mafia role "Werewolves" at your table, no other change needed.

Q: Which version is better for beginners? A: Neither is harder or easier, the rules are the same. Use whichever theme excites your group more.

Q: Are there Werewolf-specific roles that Mafia does not have? A: Some commercially published Werewolf games (like Bezier Games' Ultimate Werewolf) have unique roles not in classic Mafia. But the base game, Werewolves, Villagers, Seer, Doctor, maps exactly to Mafia, Detective, Villager, Doctor in our app.

Q: Is Among Us the same as Mafia? A: Among Us shares the social deduction concept but is a video game with a task-completion mechanic rather than a pure discussion and vote format. Mafia/Werewolf is the tabletop precursor of the genre.
