Use this imposter game word list when you need enough variety for several game nights. It contains 355 distinct entries across eight categories, from familiar food to specialist interests. Keep the list on the host's screen rather than showing the selected answer to everyone.
This is the full categorized bank. For a faster choice, start with our curated best words for imposter game: a short list of funny, easy and hard picks. This larger library preserves a broad range of topics: the harder sections are optional, not a recommendation to use words your friends do not know. These are editorial prompts, not a claim that every entry is in the app.

Ask whether everyone could explain it after the reveal. If the answer is no, choose something else. The labels below describe possible difficulty for an English-speaking group; familiarity varies by place, age and interests. Names and specialist terms are never universally easy or hard.

Looking for an imposter game with a hint word?
A word-specific hint such as “Echo” for “Dolphin” differs from a broad category hint such as “Animals.” This app's Imposter Hint option gives the category. The examples below help players practise their spoken clues; they are not a promise that the app deals a separate hint word with each answer.
Turn the category hint on or off directly below Categories in Pass & Play or online room setup. For two related secret words instead, choose Undercover or use the paired-word guide. Keep this list private while a round is in progress.
Want to give a custom hint word yourself?
For a paper house variant, let one non-playing organizer choose the secret answer and one related hint. Give the crew only the answer and the imposter only the hint. For example, the answer “Dolphin” might pair with “Echo.” Keep the cards separate: showing the whole row gives away the answer.
This needs an organizer and your own cards or messages. Our built-in switch supplies a category hint instead. Start with the short word guide and its hint-setting screenshot if you want to use the app without that extra preparation.
Imposter words with hint examples
These are examples of clues a player might give, not guaranteed winning hints. Read them before the round. Showing this table to the imposter would reveal the answer bank.
| Secret answer | Broad clue | More specific clue | Why it changes the round |
|---|---|---|---|
| Popcorn | Evening | Kernel | The second clue narrows the food considerably |
| Lighthouse | Coast | Beacon | Both connect to location without spelling the answer |
| Chess | Planning | Check | The second clue nearly names a central mechanic |
| Hammock | Rest | Sway | One describes purpose, the other movement |
| Firefly | Summer | Glow | Different aspects can make two honest clues sound unrelated |
| Umbrella | Commute | Canopy | Context is broader than a feature |
| Metronome | Practice | Tempo | Use only if everybody understands the object |
| Museum | Weekend | Exhibit | A location can be described through an experience |
Start with a broad association if your group finds rounds too easy. If nobody can explain their clues even after the reveal, use more familiar words. Do not demand instant answers or treat a pause as evidence of lying.
Two-word answers versus two different secret words
There are two different requests hidden in “two words for imposter game.” A phrase such as ice cream, polar bear or solar panel is a single answer made of two words. Your group can use phrases while still limiting spoken clues to one word.
Giving different related answers to players is a different setup, such as Undercover mode. For a homemade variant, a pair such as café / bakery offers overlap without being identical. Boat / ship may be too close for some groups; boat / microscope is too disconnected. Review pairs with your group's vocabulary in mind and keep the two answers private. Our app uses its own paired-word packs, not automatic combinations from this list.
How to use the list across several rounds
Choose a category privately and cross off words after using them. With paper roles, have a non-playing host write the chosen answer on matching slips and prepare the imposter slip separately. Rotate the host between rounds if everybody wants to play.
For app play, open the free game and choose from the available categories. Private role reveals and voting are handled in the game. If you only want a quick standalone word, the sample generator is separate and uses a limited daily pool. Trying samples does not require buying anything to continue with friends.
For drawing rounds, choose a concrete animal or object. Use paper or a separate drawing device. The celebrity, profession and abstract prompts are word-game ideas, not necessarily suitable drawing subjects.
Common questions
Why are there 355 entries instead of 300?
The guide contains eight collections totaling 355. Its existing web address has been kept so older bookmarks still work. The number describes listed entries, not the total number of words available in the app.
Can every age group use the hard sections?
No. Preview unfamiliar foods, specialist professions and entertainment titles. For children or language learners, select vocabulary they already know. The classroom guide explains how to prepare a suitable group activity.
Are football and soccer different prompts?
Both appear as familiar labels in the sports collection, but their meaning overlaps depending on where you live. Pick the term your group uses rather than treating synonyms as distinct rounds. The count is of distinct written entries, not 355 completely unrelated concepts.
Should we reveal the category?
Agree before play. A public category gives the imposter useful information and can make a beginner round easier. Follow the selected app mode's instructions when using the app instead of changing role information halfway through.
Which words should we remove from our own list?
Remove anything unknown to the group, anything that singles out a player unkindly, and answers you have used too recently. You do not need to finish every category to have a good game night.
For paired-word play, see 30 Undercover word pairs with example clues. The guide explains shared associations, useful differences and a private paper setup; these are separate from standard no-word imposter rounds.
