What Is the Imposter Word Game?
The imposter word game is a social deduction game for 3–15 players, on one phone or online, where one player is secretly the imposter, they don't know the secret word that everyone else knows. Their job is to blend in and avoid being caught. Everyone else's job is to identify the imposter through a round of clues and a group vote.
It takes under 2 minutes to learn, about 5–10 minutes to play a round, and gets sharper and funnier the more you play. This page focuses on worked examples and example clues; the imposter game rules page is the short reference. No equipment needed beyond a phone with findtheimposter.com, free, no download required.
What You Need
- A phone, tablet, or computer (one per player works best; passing one phone also works)
- 3 or more players, 4–10 is the ideal range

The Full Rules, Step by Step
Step 1: Set Up the Game
One player opens Find The Imposter and selects:
- Number of players (3–15, local or online)
- Number of imposters (1 for most groups; 2 for 8+ players)
- Word category (All Categories, or a specific one like Food, Sports, or Movies)
- Time limit (optional, 3 minutes works well for most groups)
Step 2: Each Player Sees Their Role Privately
Pass the phone around, or each player opens the game on their own device in online multiplayer mode. Each player taps "Reveal My Word" and sees either:
- The secret word (e.g., "Coffee"), they're a crew member
- "YOU ARE THE IMPOSTER", they have no idea what the word is
Don't show your screen to anyone. Imposters should try not to react when they see their role.
Step 3: Give Clues in Turn
Starting with any player and going clockwise, each person gives one clue about the secret word. Rules for clues:
- Can be one word or a short phrase
- Must relate to the secret word
- Cannot be the word itself or a direct synonym
- Should not be too obvious (saying "round flat dough" for pizza is banned in most groups)
Crew members: Give a clue specific enough that others who know the word recognize you, but not so obvious the imposter immediately guesses it.
Imposters: Give a clue that sounds plausible based on what you've heard. You're faking it, but a confident fake is harder to catch than an obviously vague one.
Step 4: Discussion and Vote
After one full round of clues, open discussion:
- Who gave the vaguest clue?
- Who hesitated?
- Whose clue didn't quite fit with the others?
Then everyone votes simultaneously. The player with the most votes is eliminated and reveals whether they were the imposter.
Step 5: Resolution
Imposter caught: In a standard one-imposter round, crew wins when only the imposter is accused. A tie that includes an innocent player gives the imposter the win. Classic does not grant a final-word-guess second chance.
Innocent player eliminated: Imposter wins immediately.
No majority vote: Imposter wins by default.
Full Example Round (Secret Word: "Pizza")
8 players, 1 imposter. Player 5 doesn't know the word.
| Player | Clue | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| Player 1 | "Italy" | Confident, accurate, establishes geographic origin |
| Player 2 | "Round" | Solid, works for pizza specifically |
| Player 3 | "Cheese" | Specific, confirms they know the word |
| Player 4 | "Friday night" | Cultural reference, experienced player |
| Player 5 (imposter) | "Delicious" | Too vague, works for anything, red flag |
| Player 6 | "Slices" | Extremely specific, unquestionably knows the word |
| Player 7 | "Crust" | Confirms pizza without saying it |
| Player 8 | "Delivery" | Specific, funny, very pizza |
Discussion: "Player 5 said 'Delicious', that works for literally any food. Suspicious." Vote goes to Player 5. They're eliminated and reveal: imposter. Crew wins because only the imposter was accused. Player 5 may have worked out “pizza,” but Classic does not turn that guess into a second-chance win.
Strategy, For Crew Members
Give a "Goldilocks" clue: Not so obvious the imposter guesses the word, not so vague you look like the imposter.
For "Pizza":
- ❌ Too obvious: "It has cheese and tomato sauce"
- ❌ Too vague: "Food"
- ✅ Just right: "Friday night" / "Delivery" / "Crust" / "Margherita"
Watch for imposter tells:
- Hesitation before giving the clue (they're still guessing)
- Copying another player's clue style or wording
- Overly vague clues that could apply to anything
- Unusually confident or elaborate clues, some imposters overcompensate
Build on earlier clues: If three players have said "Italy", "round", "cheese", your clue can reference those relationships in a way only someone who knows the word would. The imposter can't do this convincingly without getting lucky.
Strategy, For Imposters
Listen before you speak. The first 2–3 clues narrow down the word dramatically. "Italy" + "round" + "cheese" is a near-certain pizza tell. You can often guess the word before your turn.
Give a safe-but-specific clue. Vague clues get you caught faster than you'd think. A slightly specific clue based on your inference sounds more genuine: "Delivery" works for pizza, Chinese food, and several other things, it sounds informed without being too revealing.
Don't directly copy anyone else's clue. If someone said "Italy", don't say "Italian". It's the most obvious tell of an imposter who ran out of ideas.
Use the clues before the vote. Understanding the likely word may help your next clue, but Classic does not award a final-guess win after elimination. Mr. White in Undercover follows a separate rule.
Game Modes
Standard: One imposter, full round of clues, single vote. Best for beginners.
Chaos Mode: Random number of imposters, nobody knows how many there are. Paranoia levels increase dramatically. Best for experienced groups.
Multiple Rounds: Play best-of-5 and track scores. Award 1 point per correct imposter identification, 2 points for the imposter surviving, 3 points for the imposter guessing the word.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you pass instead of giving a clue? You can, but most groups treat a pass as suspicious. Some groups allow one pass per player per game.
What if two people are imposters? They don't know each other's identity and have to fake it independently. Creates chaos and incredible moments.
Can the imposter lie when accused? Yes, that's the entire job. Lying convincingly is how you win.
What's the youngest age the game works for? Around 8–10 with simple categories (Food, Animals). Younger kids can play with parental guidance and simpler word choices.
Is there a time limit per clue? Optional. Most groups use the honor system. If someone is stalling for 30 seconds, call it out.
