How to Play Guess the Player, the 2-Player Football Guessing Game

Learn how to play Guess the Player: two secret footballers, useful yes/no questions, Countdown and Chess Clock rules, correct guesses and rematches.

Guess the Player is a football guessing game for two people sharing one phone or computer. Each person privately receives a different footballer and tries to identify the opponent’s player through yes/no questions. Both people ask questions and answer honestly.

Start a free two-player game. It runs in your browser without an account or download. This version is a local duel on a shared device, rather than a room joining two remote phones.

Set up your football guessing game

  1. Enter both names so you can recognize each side of the clock.
  2. Choose leagues you both follow. Leaving the filter at All includes the available leagues.
  3. Begin with Casual difficulty and legends off, or include retired players if both people know them.
  4. Choose Countdown, initially 20 seconds per turn, or Chess Clock, initially five minutes per person. Adjust the duration before starting.
  5. Start the game. Player 1 privately reveals their card, hides it and passes the device. Player 2 does the same.
  6. When both people are ready, put the device between you and press START. The first name entered takes the first turn.

The game draws two different footballers from the same difficulty tier. A player can request a replacement during the private reveal, with the other person’s agreement, if another name is available in that tier. Do not show the card while explaining the request.

Useful yes/no questions

Start broadly, then narrow down using the answers you already have.

What you want to learnQuestion to try
Era, if legends are includedIs this player retired?
PositionIs this player a goalkeeper?
Nationality regionIs this player European?
Career historyHas this player played in Spain?
Another career clueHas this player played in France?
A specific shortlistHas this player represented England?

Ask about one fact at a time. “Is this player French and a striker?” is difficult to use after a no: you do not know which part was false. “Are they famous?” depends too much on the person answering.

Agree whether club questions cover a whole career or a particular season. The bundled player data is not a live transfer feed. If neither person knows a fact, rephrase instead of treating uncertainty as dishonesty. Cards are not full biographies, and the app does not verify spoken answers.

Countdown: a fresh thinking period each turn

Countdown is the default. It starts with 20 seconds, and tapping the screen resets the timer and passes the turn. Reaching zero gives a time-up reminder; it does not automatically declare a loser.

Use Pause if you need a break. End Round asks for confirmation before revealing both cards. Ending this shared timer manually does not declare a winner: there are no separate time banks to compare.

Chess Clock: separate time for each player

Chess Clock starts with five minutes per person. Only the active player’s clock runs. Ask your question, hear the answer, then tap your side to pass the turn. The top side is rotated to face the person sitting opposite you.

If a clock reaches zero, choose extra time or end the game with the other person winning. When you correctly name the opponent’s footballer, use I guessed it! and confirm together. Your clock keeps running during that confirmation, so do not open it before you have a real answer.

If you end a chess-clock game manually, the person with more time left wins. Equal clocks produce no declared winner.

Does a wrong guess automatically lose?

No. The app does not listen to or judge spoken guesses. Continue alternating turns after an incorrect name unless you agreed on a one-attempt house rule beforehand. Do not press the successful-guess button until the other person confirms the answer.

A short example round

Imagine you have narrowed the answer to a retired goalkeeper. Asking whether the player is retired again wastes a question. A question about a country or a league they played in can help you distinguish the remaining names.

Your friend answers, then gets a turn to investigate your secret footballer. Keep the two sets of answers separate: you are each solving a different name. A correct answer should come from the questions, rather than seeing the other card.

Playing again or making a tournament

Play Again deals another pair using the current pool. New Game returns to setup if you want to change filters or the timer. A best-of-five tournament is a house format: keep its score yourselves, since the game does not provide a tournament table.

For a larger group, try Football Imposter, which uses one shared footballer and a player who must bluff without knowing it. That is a different game from this honest-question duel.
