Mafia Game

How the Detective and Doctor work in the Mafia Game: nightly investigations, protecting players, and using these power roles to swing the game for the town.

Detective and Doctor: The Mafia Game's Power Roles Explained

In a standard Mafia Game, two roles have the power to turn the tide for the Village: the Detective and the Doctor. Without them, the Village is a group of uninformed voters trying to guess based on vibes. With them, the town has tools, investigation results, protective saves, and the potential to decisively identify Mafia members. This guide explains how each power role works, how to play them well, and how they interact with each other and with advanced roles like the Mastermind.

The Detective

What the Detective Does

Every night, the Detective silently investigates one player. The app shows the narrator a private result: Mafia or Not Mafia. The narrator gives the Detective a silent signal, a nod for Mafia, a head-shake for Not Mafia, that only the Detective sees.

No one else in the room knows who the Detective investigated or what the result was. The Detective must decide when and how to use this information.

How the Investigation Works in the App

  1. Narrator reads: "Detective, open your eyes."
  2. Detective points at the player they want to investigate.
  3. The app shows the narrator the result privately.
  4. Narrator signals the Detective: nod (Mafia) / head-shake (Not Mafia).
  5. Narrator reads: "Detective, close your eyes."

The result is not logged publicly, it exists only in the Detective's memory and the narrator's dashboard.

When to Share Your Results

This is the Detective's hardest decision. The options:

Share immediately (risky but high-impact): If you investigated someone and confirmed they are Mafia, sharing the result immediately can redirect the vote decisively. But it also announces your identity, and the Mafia will target you the very next night.

Share anonymously: Claim to have "strong suspicion" without revealing you are the Detective. This protects your identity longer but carries less weight with the group.

Wait for confirmation: Investigate 2–3 players before making any claim. Multiple confirmed results are much harder to argue against than a single one.

Reveal yourself strategically: If the Doctor knows you are the Detective and protects you, you can be more aggressive. Coordinate this in the day phase without revealing role names directly.

The Mastermind Problem

If the game includes the Mastermind role, one Mafia player will return a "Not Mafia" result to the Detective. This is the Mastermind's passive ability, they are designed specifically to fool you.

This means: do not put absolute confidence in a single "Not Mafia" result. If the Mastermind is in play, your clean investigation could be covering for a Mafia member. Share results with appropriate hedging: "I investigated X and got a clear result, but I know there may be a Mastermind in play."

The Doctor

What the Doctor Does

Every night, the Doctor silently chooses one player to protect. If the Mafia (or Serial Killer) targets the same player the Doctor protects, that player survives the night. The app resolves this automatically, you do not need to manually check.

The Doctor can protect themselves (once per game, as a common house rule).

How the Protection Works in the App

  1. Narrator reads: "Doctor, open your eyes."
  2. Doctor points at a player to save.
  3. The app notes the save. If the save target matches the Mafia's kill target, no death occurs.
  4. Narrator reads: "Doctor, close your eyes."

Who to Save

Night 1: Save yourself. The Doctor is one of the Mafia's highest-priority targets once suspected. Your survival is more valuable than a speculative save.

Night 2 onward: Save the player most likely to be targeted. Common logic:

  • Protect the Detective, if you suspect who the Detective is (they asked probing questions, made careful accusations), they are the Mafia's priority target.
  • Protect the most vocal accuser, a player who has been making strong, well-reasoned accusations will likely be targeted next.
  • Protect yourself again if still uncertain, better to waste a save than to lose the Doctor.

When to Reveal You Are the Doctor

Almost never, until the endgame. Once the Mafia knows who the Doctor is, you become Target Number One. The only time to reveal yourself is:

  • When you need to coordinate a specific save with the group ("protect me so I can protect the Detective")
  • When you are down to 3–4 players and hiding your role is no longer meaningful

How Detective and Doctor Work Together

The ideal teamwork pattern:

  1. Detective investigates a player. Gets a Mafia confirmation.
  2. Detective shares the result anonymously during the day discussion. Town votes out the confirmed Mafia.
  3. Doctor suspects the Detective will be targeted that night (Mafia tries to silence them).
  4. Doctor protects the Detective. They survive.
  5. Next day, Detective confirms another Mafia member. Pattern repeats.

This two-role synergy is the core engine of a town victory. The Mafia's counter is to eliminate one of these roles before the synergy establishes itself.

The Mastermind Counter

If the game includes a Mastermind, the Detective must treat all "Not Mafia" results with some doubt. The Doctor's strategy does not change much, they still protect the most valuable active player. But the Detective should:

  • Share "Not Mafia" results less publicly
  • Watch for players who seem too comfortable being "cleared" by the Detective
  • Remember that a confirmed Mafia result is still reliable, only innocent results may be compromised

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can the Detective investigate the same player two nights in a row? A: Yes, but it wastes a night action. You already have the result from night one.

Q: Can the Doctor save an eliminated player? A: No. The Doctor can only save players who are currently alive.

Q: What happens if the Doctor saves someone who was not targeted? A: Nothing, the save has no effect. A wasted night action.

Q: Can the Detective be the Doctor? A: No, these are separate roles assigned to separate players.

Q: What if the Doctor and Mafia both target the same player? A: The Doctor's save wins. The player survives. The Mafia's kill is negated for that night.
